How do teachers evaluate?
The answer to this question is not very complex to understand. In every educational system we need to evaluate principally with the purpose of to grade, rank, classify and promote the students. It is also used for certifying the completion of a course, selection of students for admission or scholarship, and for predicting their future success in different endeavors. It is important to mention these purposes are for the end of evaluation.
But the main purpose of evaluation in schools has been to contribute for quality betterment in education which it does by giving feedback concerning pupil learning, classroom teaching, curriculum adjustment and course content. It also helps to bring about all round development of the student’s personality when it is used for developing their non-cognitive capacities.
When we evaluate the progress of a pupil we contribute directly to the advance of pupil process learning in different ways for example through the feedback from teacher to the students. The pupil knows what teacher wants that he or she learns. Also, the feedback from evaluation provides him or her information about his/her progress. This continuous evaluation permit to remediate any problem in learning process, that is to say, evaluation helps through diagnosis and remediation. It enables the teacher to maintain a continuous and regular vision on pupil development. Evaluation also motivates the students learn and promotes their competitive spirit and they feel stimulated to show their excellence.
Other very important point is the evaluation helps to promote the responsibility of the teacher.
The children’s results will depend on a good methodology in teaching and for that reason that evaluation is an instrument for the improvement of teaching process, considering that
students are not showing learning outcomes, the teacher may think of changing his/her strategies of teaching.
Just like evaluation helps to improve the teaching performance also gives information regarding the effectiveness of the course content. There may be certain curricular areas which may prove to be difficult for the students as their maturity level is not developed enough to cope up with them. It may be modified and gives the basis for curriculum revision.
Finally, the prime concern of education is to bring about an all round development of human personality which can be done by developing non-cognitive capacities of students along with the cognitive capacities. This can be ensured only when a school takes up the system of evaluating these aspects of children’s personality considering not only intellectual powers but the others aspects like social intelligence, emotional intelligence and physical aspects of the personality as vital as the development of mental intelligence. It is like this the evaluation plays an important role in the life of the students and teacher covering areas before mentioned with the purpose of helps in this difficult process that is teaching.
